Category 5 Hurricane Dorian Update- Additional Storm Surges, Hurricane Warnings & Watches Issued for Florida Coast Earlier today, Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas as a Category 5 major hurricane, with sustained wind of 185 mph and gusts over 220 mph, making it a "catastrophic" storm with "devastating winds," according to the National Hurricane Center. This "catastrophic" storm may come dangerously close to Florida, and additional Hurricane warnings and storm surge warnings are posted for lengthy stretches of the central Florida coast. At 8 p.m. Eastern time, the storm was moving slowly — just 5 miles an hour — across Great Abaco Island toward Grand Bahama Island. Forecasters said it would continue to lash those islands into Monday. Storm surges of as much as 18 to 23 feet were possible, enough to swamp many low-lying areas of the islands, and as much as 25 inches of rain could fall before the storm passes. As the current forecast stands, Central Florida will feel impacts on Tuesday and Wednesday. Additional Hurricane Warnings have been issued for Jupiter, Inlet Florida to the Brevard/Volusia County, Florida Line and Hurricane Watches issued for Volusia County. Hurricane Dorian Becomes " 2nd Strongest In Modern Record," Florida Still In Cone Of Uncertainty At the 11:00 AM update from the National Hurricane Center, we learned that Hurricane Dorian is now the "2nd Strongest Hurricane In Modern Day History" with winds of 185 mph! Making it stronger than Hurricane Michael in 2018 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992, But only one storm has had stronger winds in the Atlantic than Dorian has right now, which was Hurricane Allen in 1980 had maximum winds of 190 mph. The menacing Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the northern Bahamas midday Sunday after strengthening to a "catastrophic" Category 5 storm -- packing winds of 185 mph and the threat of torrential rain that could last for days as millions in the U.S. along the Southeastcoast from Florida to North Carolina are keeping an eye on where the storm may head next.
